Thomas thanks Welsh fans

25 12 2009

Former Wales and Lions skipper Gareth Thomas hopes his weekend revelations about his sexuality can help other professional sportsmen.

The 35-year-old, Wales’ most capped player, joins stars like basketball’s John Amaechi and hurling’s Donal Og Cusack who have come out and admitted they are gay.

The former Wales international full-back said he was grateful for the “amazing response” he had received.

“Just because you are gay, it doesn’t mean you fancy every man who walks the planet,” Thomas told the Daily Mail.

“I don’t want to be known as a gay rugby player. I am a rugby player first and foremost. I am a man.

“I hope that by saying this I can make a big difference to others in my situation. But for now, I just want to focus on being a rugby player and beating my old club Toulouse.”

Schedule revealed for 2010 Six Nations

25 12 2009

The Six Nations council has announced the running order for next season’s Six Nations, with Ireland kicking off their title defence at home against Italy on Saturday February 6.

The popularity of this season’s first Friday night game with TV viewers, where France ended Wales’ Grand Slam hopes in Paris, has meant that the fixture will be reversed at the Millennium Stadium this season, on Friday February 26.

In a repeat of two seasons ago, England kick-off their tournament with the visit of Warren Gatland’s Wales to Twickenham, while France travel to face Scotland at Murrayfield.

Welsh Rugby Union chairman David Pickering is pleased to see the Friday night game return, citing both economic and rugby reasons for his excitement.

“We are starting to see genuine reasons for saying the experiment is a successful one,” said Pickering. “The match in Paris last year generated the biggest television audience for a game in France at an average audience of 5.9million and television audiences throughout the UK, Ireland and Italy were the second largest of all the fifteen tournament games at 11million.

“We had a sell-out Stade de France crowd, a tremendous atmosphere and produced one of the best matches of the tournament for the neutral. In Wales we would obviously like to reverse the result next year but we are very much looking forward to what should be a great night out in Cardiff for the fans, a bumper TV audience and a magnificent atmosphere for the players within the confines of the Millennium Stadium.”

Dragons’ Joe Bearman keen for Wales Six Nations spot

25 12 2009

Dragons back-rower Joe Bearman says he is keen to be in Wales contention ahead of the Six Nations.

The 30-year-old was a hot tip for a first cap in the November Tests after qualifying for Wales by residency, but a groin injury spoiled his chances.

“I’d love to play for Wales, I don’t hide that fact,” Bearman told the BBC.

“I can just play hard and well, look after the Dragons and get some results under our belts. If it comes, it comes, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”

Bearman has been a popular figure at Rodney Parade since his 2005 move from Cornish Pirates and he has now completed a three-year residential qualification.

BBC Sport understands the Wales camp contacted the Dragons in the autumn to ensure his paperwork was in order.

“I thought it was the tax man,” joked Bearman. “[A potential Wales cap] would be the best day of my life.”

The Londoner, who moved to Cornwall before his switch to Newport, specialises at number eight or blind-side, where he would be competing with Ryan Jones, Jonathan Thomas, Andy Powell, Dan Lydiate, Gareth Delve and Dafydd Jones for a Wales spot.

His all-action, athletic style could also potentially translate to the open-side, where national coach Warren Gatland is desperately seeking a stand-in for the injured Martyn Williams.

Thomas and Dafydd Jones are also options in that position, along with dedicated open-sides Gavin Thomas, Richie Pugh, Sam Warburton and Robin Sowden-Taylor.

“I’ve loved living here, my girlfriend’s family is half Welsh,” said the 6ft 4ins, 17-stone Bearman.

“If I was ever asked to play for Wales it would be a great, great honour that I would grab with both hands.”

While Bearman may be targeting a high-intensity international before a packed Millennium Stadium, he revealed that his career could have taken a very different path.

“I had a trial for Everton [Football Club] when I was about 12 years old,” he told BBC Sport Wales.

“I was captain for our county, playing up front, when we went to a tournament on the Isle of Wight.

“We played against Manchester City and Manchester United in our group and I scored twice against United.

“There were a lot of scouts there so I went up [to Everton] for a week.

“But it was a big jump in standard and it didn’t work out – I’m not on £100,000 a week!”

Hogg to miss Six Nations

25 12 2009

Edinburgh and Scotland forward Ally Hogg will miss the Six Nations tournament after being told he needs surgery on an injured hip that will keep him out of action for the rest of this season.

Hogg, 26, received the diagnosis in the wake of Edinburgh’s European Cup defeat at Bath on Sunday and club coach Rob Moffat confirmed that surgery would go ahead as soon as possible.

“Ally has suffered a tear in a muscle in his hip and requires an operation,” Moffat said. “It means he will be out of action for six months and so will not be available for selection for the Six Nations.”

Hogg has played 48 times for his country but did not feature in the autumn internationals against Australia, Fiji and Argentina, despite former Edinburgh coach Andy Robinson now being in charge of the national team.
