Italy have been playing international rugby since the late 1920s, and today are considered to be in the top tier of European rugby and compete annually in the Six Nations Championship with England, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The Five Nations became the Six Nations when Italy became the final member of this elite band of Northern Rugby Nations and at the time there were many dissenters as it was thought they would find it hard to hold their own and compete at this level against he likes of England and France.

Rugby: England sevens squad hit the pub

9 10 2010
Ryan hoped last month’s Middlesex Sevens would provide the team with a crucial warm-up for Delhi but their disappointing quarter-final exit left them short of game time.

Looking to make up the shortfall, England played in a low-key tournament in Hertfordshire that caught unsuspecting opponents by surprise.

“It was obvious we needed more so we entered the Harpenden pub sevens and played seven games there.

England V Ireland Hospitality

“We romped through it and that gave us some good game time. It was a nice experience and the boys enjoyed it.

“The reaction to us was positive. Once the other teams had run off their hangover from the night before, they gave us some decent opposition.

“We played the Marauders and Samurai and put 40 points on both, but it was good to practice different things and it enabled us to develop relationships on the pitch.”

England’s squad is full of sevens regulars and promising young talent but other than Gollings, it is bereft of established names.

Players such as Mathew Tait and Danny Care helped them win silver in Melbourne four years ago and while Ryan accepts England do not possess the same quality as 2002 or 2006, he still expects them to challenge for gold.

“My expectation is the same as any England coach and that’s to win every game and win a gold medal,” he said.

“We don’t go in as favourites as New Zealand have four All Blacks in their squad and have a very settled squad.

Ireland V England Hospitality

“Those two teams are the favourites and we’re behind them, but that’s not to say we don’t expect to do well and get on the podium.

“When you go down this list there are no obvious superstars when you compare it to the teams of 2006 and 2002.

“In Melbourne they sent home David Strettle and Ugo Monye because they hadn’t made the squad and that was the depth they had.

“But the climate’s changed and we’ve got 12 guys who will fight for the shirt and do everything they can.”

England V Ireland Hospitality

Ryan sympathises with the reluctance of Aviva Premiership clubs to release their top players for sevens.

“In 2006 there were regular Premiership players – guys like Mathew Tait, Tom Varndell and David Strettle,” he said.

“The Premiership is a different beast now and the sevens circuit has changed as there are more tournaments.

“Those players just aren’t available to us now. If I was a director of rugby in the Premiership then I wouldn’t want to lose one of my best players for four months at a time.

“So you look down at the next level, which is either sevens specialists or guys who are young enough to be able to be taken out of the 15 system for a period.

Wales can retain European Cup claims Crusaders youngster Lewis Mills

9 10 2010

Crusaders youngster Lewis Mills is confident Wales can retain their European Cup crown next month. Mills, 21, is hoping to be part of the Wales team that takes on Italy at the Racecourse on Sunday, October 3 when Wales warm up for the defence of their title.

The young Welsh star made two appearances for Iestyn Harris’ side during last year’s competition, where Wales defeated Serbia, Ireland and Scotland to lift the trophy.

But Wales face an altogether tougher prospect this year, with France being added to the mix, while the winners will go onto the Four Nations competition the following season and potentially line up against Australia, New Zealand and England.

And Mills, who has made a huge impact playing for the South Wales Scorpions this season thanks to the dual registration agreement, says he hopes to play an even bigger part this time around, starting at the Racecourse next month.

“I had a couple of games in the European Cup last year, which was a great boost for rugby league in Wales,” Mills said.

“Hopefully we can win this tournament again this year and qualify for the Four Nations, which would be massive and will be a great boost for the game in Wales.

“There’s been some really good banter among the Welsh boys and Rocky. He keeps saying that he’s going to give a couple of us some cheap shots on the field but it’s nothing we can’t handle.

“I’m looking forward to the Italy game, it’ll be a great game to watch and anyone who loves Rugby League should definitely come down to the Racecourse. It’ll be an interesting game, a bit of rivalry and banter and a great day out.”

Italy V England Hospitality

He said: “It’s not been too bad as I’ve been travelling back down to South Wales to go to university also so I’ve got used to going up and down from North to South Wales.

“I’ve enjoyed training with the Crusaders and also enjoyed helping the Scorpions and I’m pleased that both sides have done so well this year. Both teams made the play-offs, which was amazing.”

Rugby scores prove Scotland has the bragging rights

3 08 2010

Did you know Scotland went through June without being beaten? Scotland is the only team in the Northern Hemisphere to go unbeaten in June with rugby scores showing a test series win over Argentina to prove their dominance in June. The same team that finished second last in the Six Nations with just one win against Ireland are making people change their thoughts on that team to the team that is playing with energy and desire to win, have won the first ever test series win.

Rugby scores show for the first time in 26 years Scotland have come out victorious with three away international victories. Then England at Twickenham back in 1983 and the two away legs in 1984 Grand Slam- Wales in Cardiff and Ireland at Lansdowne Road.

What help Scotland’s rankings was their win against the Pumas helping them with the position in the IRB world rankings after the South American tour with wins over Tucuman and Mar de Plata. They have matched their highest rankings ever since they have been in existence, being in seventh place, with Wales and Argentina trailing behind.

The teams self esteem has risen and are aware of the fact that they can win if they want to, making them a threat to the top nations in Rugby for the World Cup next year.

But just like this team can make it up the ladder they can also descend if Andy Robinson fails to start scoring more tries and will not advance higher up unless they unleash the beast. Scotland did not score a single try in their first test-win with Jim Hamilton being the only man to cross the try line in the second.

Robinson has changed the team since he joined them. A good coach will have his players play how he would like them to and it will equal good players. Rugby scores have proven that Scotland has the bragging rights in their area and are looking to keep it that way. Rugby spread betting on Scotland have proven to be profitable! Caroline Mahon included in Ireland Rugby World Cup squad

3 08 2010

NEWBRIDGE College teacher Caroline Mahon has been named on the Ireland women’s rugby squad for the forthcoming World Cup in England. The UL Bohemians club player is part of a 26 strong squad that will take on England, the USA and Kazakhstan in the pool stages of the tournament which gets underway next month.

Caroline has been playing internationally for four years and in her debut season represented her country in both the Six Nations and the World Cup. Despite her experience she is both delighted and relieved to be part of the squad for next month’s showcase.

“I’m really thrilled. You can’t take anything for granted. It’s tougher now to hold to your place than it was when I first started because there is so much competition for positions,” Caroline told the Leinster Leader this week.

Mahon plays her club rugby with UL Bohemians and is joined by no less than eight of her club mates on the panel for the World Cup. She also lines out for Leinster and indeed has captained her province in the past.

Meanwhile Ireland captain Fiona Coughlan will have the support of Straffan behind her as her parents reside in the Kildare village, while fellow squad member Sinead Ryan is employed at Pfizer in Newbridge.
Ireland will open their World Cup campaign with a tough encounter against host team and one of the pre-tournament favourites England. The game will be televised live on Sky Sports. Ireland then play former winners and three time finalists USA in their second game with the final pool game against Kazakhstan four days later. All the pool games are set to be played in the Surrey Sports Camp which will serve as the Rugby World Cup village for all participating teams.

Former England coach Brian Ashton returns to Fylde

3 08 2010

Former England head coach Brian Ashton has agreed to return to his old club Fylde as a coaching consultant.

“Fylde helped me in launching my playing career in the 1960′s,” Ashton told BBC Radio Lancashire.

Ashton, who received an MBE in 2007, spent seven years at the Woodlands between 1966-73, playing alongside club stalwarts Bill Beaumont and Malcolm Phillips.

He later went on to coach England despite never having represented them at playing level.

Ashton was part of the coaching set up at Bath between 1989-1997, during their most successful period in English club rugby, before he returned to The Rec for a second spell in 2006.

His preference for expansive attacking rugby saw him recruited as England assistant coach under Sir Clive Woodward in 1998 and his is largely credited with transforming his country’s style of play.

He almost guided them to success in the World Cup final in 2007 before narrowly losing 15-6 to winners South Africa despite a shaky start in the early stages of the competition.

But he believes returning to his roots is just as important and is relishing the chance to improve Fylde’s fortunes.

“Things are substantially different,” said Ashton. “They now play in a league which we never did and the whole environment has changed, although in essence a lot of things are still the same.

“I’d like to think that one or two of the guys that I know there have retained some of the essential amateurism of the game in terms of playing an enjoyable game of rugby and challenging themselves.

“I would like to stress that director of rugby Mark Nelson is the man in charge.

“I’ll support him and do whatever I can to help the players and team develop in an environment of freedom and make it enjoyable.”

Rugby: Wales have to plan long term

3 08 2010

WALES rugby chiefs have been told they must have an eye on the World Cup when they consider the future of Warren Gatland – the 2015 World Cup.

The message comes from former national coach Alan Davies, who believes long-term strategic thinking has to underpin the decision-making process over whether the Kiwi is offered a new deal.

Davies was brutally sacked by the Welsh Rugby Union, without a word of thanks before the 1995 World Cup after top brass panicked in the wake of a Five Nations whitewash that year.

Those wounds have long healed for successful businessman Davies, but he still thinks the emotion needs to be taken out of the question of whether Gatland stays or goes.

“It is human nature to get passionate about the future of the Wales coach and we always get that passion whenever the subject is brought up,” said the Ynysybwl-born former Nottingham and England B coach.

“But in terms of whether Warren Gatland stays or goes, I think the WRU need to be thinking very long term.

“There are teenagers playing junior rugby now who are going to be in contention to play in the 2015 World Cup and Wales needs to ask itself how we want those guys to play.

Wales V England Hospitality

England V Wales Hospitality

“We must have an idea about where we want to go in that period, how we want to play. It needs to be a blueprint that everyone, including the regions, buys into.

Davies, his assistant Gareth Jenkins and team manager Robert Norster were dismissed in the spring of 1995 after Wales had lost all four of their Five Nations matches, scoring just one try and conceding eight in the process.

The championship-winning success of 1994 was forgotten, as was the fact that Wales had been bedeviled by injuries and the loss of the talismanic Scott Quinnell to rugby league.

Kevin Bowring, Gareth Jenkins and Mike Ruddock are the Welshmen who have had stabs at the job since, Ruddock’s Grand Slam of 2005 the solitary bright point of home rule.

The job is now in Kiwi hands for the third time, but Davies says the lack of a Welsh succession line is damaging. “Really, putting a production line of coaches in place for situations like the one we are now in with Warren is critical,” he added.

He agrees that there are problems that need addressing, but he believes reacting to the way the game is changing at highest level is key factor.

He said: “I don’t know whether this is right, but my perception is that the Wales players have stopped thinking about trying to beat men running.

“I know everyone is saying this, but the key to scoring tries is to engineer situations where backs are running at forwards.”

Rugby: Manuflattered by England recognition

3 08 2010

Tongan international Willie Manu says he is flattered to be considered for an England call-up.He now qualifies for England on residency grounds, having moved to the United Kingdom in 2006 – initially to play for Castleford – and he was brought into England coach Steve McNamara’s squad for a get-together in Liverpool this week as part of the preparation for the end-of-season Four Nations series.

“Whilst I will always be proud of my Tongan heritage, I am honoured to have been recognised by the England national team,” said Manu.

“I was flattered to receive the call from Steve McNamara to join the players this week and, if I was to be given the chance to play at this level, it would be something I would have to consider.

“To play alongside the best players in the English game whilst challenging the strongest players from the world of rugby league and testing yourself at the highest level is the aim of every professional sportsmen and, if selected for England, this would give me the chance to do that.”

.”It’s a hot potato,” said Agar. “If Steve picks him, he’ll open himself up for some criticism, but if he picks him and England win the Four Nations, he’ll be judged as a hero.

England V Italy Hospitality

Italy V England Hospitality

“Most other sports do it – a lot of players Australia pick have been born and bred in New Zealand – and Willie by rights qualifies for England on residency grounds, as he would in cricket or rugby union.

“What I do know is that he’s a player that can win you a game so, from an ability and form perspective, I don’t think there’s any argument.

“He’s a long way off selection but, if he wants to represent England and Steve is prepared to pick him, I think we should support him.

“It’s up to Steve,” he said. “There is nothing illegal in what he’s done and I’ll back him in every way I can because I want England to do well.

“Whoever is coach, the selection wouldn’t please everybody. You’ve got to accept that some selections are easier than others.”

“We don’t get many opportunities to get the country’s elite players together so the chance to work alongside the Royal Marines was really useful.

“All the players involved are potential candidates for selection for this year’s Four Nations but that’s not to say the final squad will come from this group. It’s certainly not a definitive list.

“As well as the boys who are playing in Australia, there are many other players to consider. The door remains wide open for anyone to play themselves into contention for selection over the next couple of months.

“It’s not just about ability – Tuesday was all about making sure we continue to develop the right culture for England to achieve international success that we began in last year’s Four Nations and continued in the mid-season international.”
